Do’s and Don’ts in Taiwan: travelling etiquette
Do’s ✅
- Do pick up a few basic phrases in Chinese – it can be helpful and appreciated.
- Do stay alert when crossing the road, watch for turning vehicles even when the pedestrian light is green, and be aware that sidewalks are not scooter-free zones.
- Do carry cash, as many small stalls and restaurants only accept cash.
- Do download transportation apps (e.g., MRT/ Uber/ Bus).
- Do keep to the right side when standing on an escalator.
- Do prepare for the summer weather in August by applying sunscreen, wearing breathable clothing, comfortable walking shoes, and carrying an umbrella, as the weather is hot, humid, with frequent rains and storms.

Don’ts ❌
- Don’t greet with a hug or kisses unless you know the person well.
- Don’t eat, chew gum, or drink in the MRT stations or trains.
- Don’t tip in most situations, as tax or service charges are included in the bill.

Earthquake Awareness
Mild to moderate earthquake occurs from time to time in Taiwan. It is important to be prepared and know how to respond.
During an Earthquake:
- Stay calm.
- Indoors: Drop to the ground, take cover under a table, and hold on. Stay away from the window or heavy furniture.
- Outdoors: Move to an open area away from the building.
- Do not use elevators.
Pay attention to the announcements and the mobile alerts.
